Sažetak
New interest for Tvrdja, now an autonomous district of Osijek, started to show some years ago, due to a less restricted political system, the advantages of Tvrdja- its site, its human scale, the proximity of city centre, the surrounding green areas - became visible and attractive to investors. After war destructions of 1991 - 1992 it was evident that Tvrdja had to be rapidly and expertly rcconstructed if we were to keept this unique urban complex from total decay. The vision of Tvrdja in the future is lately being defined at various levels as the new cultural and educational centre of Osijek The purpose of this article is to stress the importance of a comprehensive reconstruction process of Tvrdja where the foreseen revival of cultural and academic life in it would also stimulate the revival of other activities, traditionally present inside Tvrdja, such as housing, catering and crafts. Their existence today shows the ability of Tvrdja to survive through dramatic historical changes and their future treatment would therefore be an indicator of the success of Tvrdja's revival.
