Sažetak
My paper seeks to contribute to the conference debate about the identity formation in literature, in particular it sets out to explore the troubling omnipresence of post-Parnell Ireland in Joyce’s works and the way it is intertwined both with aesthetic and historical representation of Irish identity in his novels. Joyce’s works burdened with repressed historical condition highlight a gap within representation and memory. Joyce’s own position as an exile had a particular role in bridging that gap, and in aestheticizing it mostly through his subversive attitude toward language. The paper will draw on basic assumptions put forward in postcolonial studies, and attempt to contribute to the wide gamut of these studies as reflected in Joyce criticism, by focusing on the dialectics between individual and collective identity and exploring the role of memory and forgetting in formation of Irish identity within this dynamics.
