Sažetak
This paper deals with James Joyce’s concept of epiphany and attempts to illustrate it with examples from his collection of short stories Dubliners. After giving a short historical outline of the use of ‘epiphany” in literature the paper focuses on Joyce’s definition of epiphany. It briefly examines ‘epiphany’ as a narrative strategy and as a mode of perception. It also discusses the term ‘gnomon’ in this context and proceeds with a brief analysis of the theme of paralysis in Dubliners rendered in various epiphanies. The paper concludes with a discussion of Joyce’s epiphanies and his use of language, and comments its relation to ‘aposiopesis’ and to Joyce’s aesthetics in general.
