Sažetak
This paper is based on qualitative interviews with student-teachers in an MA in TEFL program. The aim of the study is to explore a) how the notion of English as an International Language is conceptualized by the student-teachers, and b) what implications EIL has on classroom practice. With the spread of English, EIL has become a new paradigm for research and practice, which has sparked much debate about the ‘monocultural/monolingual’ native English speaker ideal in ELT Today, the English language is taught primarily by non-native speakers to non-native speakers ; however, it seems that EIL has had little implication on ELT in Europe. In line with this view, findings in this study suggest that there is a wide gap between EIL at the theoretical level and its implications in classroom practice. It will be argued that, at present, EIL does not seem to be a viable paradigm for ELT.
