Sažetak
The project of low and intermediate level radioactive waste repository siting and
construction is one of important activities related to establishing the radwaste management system in
the Republic of Croatia. Croatia, as the co-owner of the Krško NPP, has an active participation in the search for solution of a safe
and environmentally acceptable final disposal of L/ILW produced in the power plant, as well as the waste expected to be generated during power
plant decommissioning. The preparatory activities include a series of steps, e.g. the repository site selection, identification
of most acceptable disposal technology, preparation of needed repository design documentation and public involvelment issues.
Two basic options of L/ILW shallow land disposal have been considered in Croatia so far: (a)subsurface disposal in horizontal tunnels, and
(b) near surface burial in specially constructed facilities. The Preliminary Design for tunnel-type repository was performed in
1988 and updated for two new design parameters in 1992. Since the same completeness level of design documentation was also
requested for the near-surface repository, the Preliminary Design was additionally done
for this repository type as well. Both designs were additionally updated in 1996. The new documentation offers the processing, technical and investment
basis required for comparison of the two types of disposal facilities. The prepared design documentation gives technical,
safety and financial background relevant
for making a final decision on the waste disposal type at preliminary/conceptual design level.
