Sažetak
This chapter presents child care development in Croatia during three periods: a)from the late 19th century to the end of the World War II, as the period of charity actions of humanitarian organizations and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) ; b) from the end of the World War II to the year 1990, the period of state paternalism ; and c) from 1990 onward, the period of public social welfare. In the third period the contemporary system of child welfare emphasises the rights and needs of children, and a more individualised approach to children and their families is described. Two basic alternative forms of childcare are presented: foster and institutional, which developed during twentieth century. Future trends in childcare are focused on deinstitutionalisation, enchancement of evidence- based practice, modells of assessment and development and strengthening of family support interventions.
