Sažetak
Frano Petruša’s 2010 graphic narrative Papak is non-fiction comics (a usage of the word ‘comics’ as a singular noun as suggested by cartoonist/theorist Scott McCloud and accepted by comics scholars) and a Croatian addition to the ever-growing and established genre of non-fiction comics. These mostly auto/biographical comics in their specific artistic interpretations investigate personal, political, and social issues in an unapologetic and unique way. The works of authors such as Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelman, and Marjane Satrapi have shown the singular strength of comics in portraying topics of war, trauma and memory and Petruša’s “autobiocomics” does the same. Yugoslav wars, mostly the war in Bosnia, have been dealt with in a number of comics by foreign authors such as Sacco, Kubert, Andersson and Sjunneson, and Hermann, but also by authors from the region, amidst which Zograf and Lavrič stand out. Petruša is amongst the rare Croatian cartoonists who revisit the war experience. Papak is the author’s coming-of-age story set at the final match of the 1999 basketball championship and a “coming-of-rage” story of his basketball coach and his traumatic war experience. I will investigate how Petruša uses a set of complex visual-verbal narrative techniques and strategies in portraying the issues of war and trauma. The retrospective narrative mode, the setting of events on numerous temporal and spatial planes simultaneously, the usage of different perspectives and points of view, and the appearance of basketball players, soldiers, and samurai on the same pages are just some comics resources that Petruša aptly opts for in his artistic vision of a young adult and a war veteran coping with their fears.
