Sažetak
The increase in cervical whiplash injuries entails an increase in the requirements role of vertebrobasilar diagnosis.
Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) on a (EME) Transscan 3-D device with 2 MHz probe was used for vertcbrobasilar circulation assessment in patients who suffered whiplash injury of the cervical spine mostly in traffic accidents.
Patients: Forty seven patients with clinically verified whiplash injury to' the cervical spine without x-ray signs of bone lesion, were examined by TCD within month from the accident and then again six months after the injury.
Results: The values of the obtained parameters were compared with normal values of transcranial Doppler velocities, and correlated to seriousness of the clinical picture. During the first month from the injury statistically significant disturbances in the vertebrobasilar circulation were recorded, mostly with spasm present in at least one of the three blood vessels examined and less frequently with spasm in two blood vessels examined.
After six months, normal finding was obtained in about 50% of the patients, whereas in the rest of patients spasm persisted in one, two or all blood vessels examined.
Conclusion:TCD of the vertebrobasilar system is one of the important methods in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with whiplash injury.
