Sažetak
We analyzed the prevalence of different risk factors in patients with ischemic stroke classified according to etiology. Clinical records of 549 patients hospitalized at the Department during a one-year period were considered. Based on history data, laboratory test results, and clinical and neurologic examination, the patients were divided into four ischemic stroke subtypes according to etiology: large vessel disease, small vessel disease, cardioembolism, and other identified and unidentified causes. In all patients, biochemistry and hematology blood tests, blood glucose and cholesterol levels, elecfrocardiography, electroencephalography, computed tomography of the brain, carotid continuous Doppler flow imaging (CDFI), and heart ultrasonography were performed. The study included 549 patients, 284 men (mean age 65.5) and 265 women (mean age 70), age range 35-94 years. Small vessel disease was the cause of stroke in 35%, cardioembolism in 28%, and large vessel disease in 24% of patients of both sexes. In males, small vessel disease caused 36%, large vessel disease 32%, and cardioembolism 23.5% of strokes. In females, small vessel disease caused 36%, cardioembolism 34%, and large vessel disease 17% of strokes. The risk factors for small vessel disease stroke were hypertension (81%), hyperlipoproteinemia (46%), and diabetes mellitus (40%). The risk factors for large vessel disease stroke were hypertension (76%), diabetes mellitus (33%), and hyperlipoproteinemia (28%).
