With the rapid development of the Internet the domain of electronic commerce, until recently being employed in large enterprise private networks only, becomes available to individual users, too. The fundamental idea of electronic commerce is the substitution of traditional commerce procedures, what includes diverse non-electronic media such as telephone, fax, postal mail and printed matter, with adequate processes within a single electronic medium - the Internet, thus introducing the concept of virtual store. The underlying technology enabling virtual store implementation is the World Wide Web (WWW) which is in turn based on a network of electronic multimedia document servers. In such a way distant users can browse online catalogs substituting traditional printed books additionally not being constrained by working hours issues. In the paper elements of electronic commerce are described along with a possible virtual store implementation within the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 environment.
