Sažetak
This chapter seeks to establish a spatial perspective on screens in the post-cinematic context, which concerns screens outside their conventional habitats like home and cinema. Adopting the ‘non-media-centric’ approach, my intention in this chapter will be to conjoin a concern with screen media (rarely addressed by the above geographers) with urban spatial analysis (not yet entirely taken on within media studies). This dual approach should afford us better understandings of the particular status screens have in the arrangement and negotiation of the everyday spaces in contemporary cities. I go back to some of my ethnographic research on the architectural moving image screen emplaced into the refurbished pavement of the promenade in Zadar, Croatia – the ‘Sun Monument’. The multidimensionality of Zadar’s ‘Monument’ (a space of promenading and entertainment) makes it a pronounced case of the spatial complexity I argue to define contemporary screen cultures. I will conclude that given the growing formal diversity and ever-surprising social adaptation of screens into particular locations, screens are increasingly to be investigated as a form of what Edward Soja calls ‘thirdspace’: a dynamic composition of the relevant material environments, technological formations, institutional histories and users’ biographies.
