Sažetak
Nonsense is an important element of literature for children. It is both appealing to children and useful for their overall development. This thesis focuses on the analysis of different characteristics of nonsense in children’s literature, establishing nonsense as a valid literary genre, and giving a brief overview of the origin of nonsense and its development through history. It also addresses such issues as translation of nonsense literature, as well as the importance of visual representation of nonsense, and the use of nonsense texts in the EFL classroom. Works by most prominent nonsense authors such as Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll are analyzed, but other authors like Shel Silverstein, Roald Dahl and Dr. Seuss are also discussed. It is concluded that children respond well to the specific qualities of nonsense, and that nonsense is a valuable asset in the development of a passionate reader and a creative thinker.
