Sažetak
The thesis explores the presence of the conventions of the fairy tale as a genre in Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), The Little Princess (1905) and The Secret Garden (1911), realistic novels written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The focus is on describing the settings, characters, plots and themes of these novels and on considering their similarities to the respective typical features of the fairy tale. A structural analysis of the novels is also performed with respect to their character functions and plot structures, based on the methodology presented in Propp's Morphology of the Folktale. The analysis reveals several fairy tale elements in the examined narratives, as well as their general intertextual relationship to the fairy tale genre conventions, even though the novels do not fully imitate the conventional fairy-tale patterns. It has also been established that some typical fairy-tale elements appear in altered forms in analyzed novels. Besides, they are rich in intertextual references to specific fairy tales, other literary works and historical events.
