Sažetak
In order to achieve sustainability, which presupposes that every area is planned according to its own potential and limitations, it is essential to identify the specifics of the location. The competition procedure for the urban- architectural proposal of the „Trg Republike“ square with a Fish market in Novi Sad demands from the competitors to re-examine the basic urban concept setting of this space. All existing buildings need to be removed from the area planned for the Fish market and new business buildings have to be put up around the market. An analysis of the existing context of the wider surroundings of the area which is in focus of the competition, as well as the analysis of the city, led us to devise a spatial concept which is possibly an alternative to the one from the competition programme. By re-examining the urban settings of the Fish market according to the competition conditions, we have concluded that the proposed block concept is not in accordance with some of the important elements of Novi Sad's urban identity. For this reason, instead of the „block matrix“, we propose the „green matrix“ on the location of the planned market. The alternative solution does not question or exclude the planned features, but it questions only their capacity and the position of the structure. At the same time, it relies on a very important element of Novi Sad's urban identity, which is the interaction between the built structures and nature (green surfaces, the river).
