Sažetak
Trace element distribution in soil and sediment samples from the Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia, will be presented. The Plitvice Lakes are system of 16 lakes at different altitudes separated by tufa barriers and waterfalls (Fig.1) and was included as a case study within SOWAEUMED Project. This specific area is subjected by the beginning of eutrophication process in form of intensive plant growth in some lakes in last several decades which concerns the management of the National Park. Trace element distribution has been determined in 8 recent sediments (cores of 40 cm length, 10 cm diameter) (Fig. 1) and 14 soil samples from broader area of the National Park. Concentration enrichment ratio (CER) of trace elements was used to evaluate anthropogenic contribution to the lake sediments and soil. Concentrations of B, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, Sr and Zn in sediment cores of two biggest lakes, Kozjak (K1) and Prošće, two smaller lakes Gradinsko and Kaluđerovac, and confluence of Rječica Brook to the Kozjak Lake (K2) were measured by ICP-MS. Samples from 3 additional cores from confluence of Rječica Brook to the lake Kozjak (K2-1, K2-2, K2-3) and soil samples were measured by portable X-Ray Fluorescence. The highest concentrations of trace elements were in the sediment of uppermost Lake Prošće and in downstream lakes concentrations were lower. Concentration of Cd in Lake Prošće was much higher than in other lakes, but due to its uniform distribution within the core was considered as of natural origin. Distribution of other elements within the cores did not indicate anthropogenic changes with exception of Pb distribution in K2 core, indicating higher Pb concentration in the bottom layers of the core. This site was the closest to the road which was used for transit in the past and the Pb could be the consequence of gasoline combustion. Concentrations of Pb and Cd measured in cores K2-1, K2-2, K2-3, were also elevated compared with other sediments. According to CER values there were no anthropogenic influence and contamination of the Plitvice Lakes sediments and soils with trace elements. Exception was high CER for Pb (>5), calculated for the soil samples from site closest to the main road indicating contamination. This is also the area where Kozjak Lake was close to the main road and influenced by Rječica Brook tributary to the Lake Kozjak. Eutrophication process was enhanced in the confluence, but CER values obtained for Pb in lake sediments (K2-1, K2-2, K2-3 and K2) at the Rječica confluence were less than 5 and did not indicate pollution. We concluded that observed eutrophication was mainly the consequence of organic material in the sediments which transported to the Kozjak Lake by the Rječica Brook.
