Sažetak
The aim of the thesis is to investigate why translational equivalence can (not) be viewed as cross-linguistics synonymy. The analysis was done at the level of lexis of English and Croatian, by comparing and contrasting randomly selected, but relevant examples of lexemes, sentences and their meanings. The thesis is structured around four main sections: section 1 introduces the notion of synonymy, explaining the definitions, criteria, degrees and the dimensions of variation thereof ; section 2 deals with intralingual synonymy, while section 3 goes beyond a single language into the realm of interlingual or cross-linguistic synonymy. Section 4 is an attempt to outline and explain the reasons why translational equivalents can be viewed as cross-linguistic synonyms.
