Sažetak
Dogfish is a member of the superclass Fish (Pisces) and class Chondrichthyes (Chondrychtyes) whose main characteristic is cartilage skeleton that is evolutionary and developmental precursor of bony skeleton. The notochord is a structure that defines all members of Chordata and plays an important role in the development of vertebrates. It occurs during embryonic development ; it is main skeletal element of the embryo and serves as a source for the formation of the surrounding tissues. Ten specimens of dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula L., young and both sexes, caught in the Adriatic Sea, were used in this research. The average length of the captured samples was 23, 84 cm. Tissue samples from cervical, toracal and lumbal region of the spine, were fixed with osmium tetroxyde, dehydrated in series of acetone and embedded in Durcupan resin. Ultrathin sections, made from selected areas of the semi-thin sections, were studied under transmission electron microscope JEOL JEM-1400. The results have shown that notochord in dogfish is placed in the central part of the vertebra, filled with large vacuoles, mutually separated with long cell cytoplasmatic extensions “Figure 1“. A numerous vesicles were observed in the notochordal cells cytoplasm, very similar to those found inside the compartments of Golgi apparatus “Figure 2“, suggesting particularly excretion activity of the notochordal cells. The notochord is surrounded with a sheath which separates it from the adjacent cartilage tissue of the vertebra trunk “Figure 3“. It was seen on ultrathin sections that the notochordal sheath consisted of collagen fibers, found also in the adjacent cartilage “Figure 4“. The cartilage contains chondrocytes located in lacunaes “Figure 5“. Some osteoblasts were seen in the neural arch of vertebra confirming the ossification of the vertebra “Figure 6“.
