Sažetak
Background information: Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders that, when occurring together, increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Set of criteria differ between different sources, but usually combine: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, plasma glucose, lipid profile and insulin intolerance. We involved pharmacist in the treatment of patients with metabolic syndrome with the whole range of responsibilities. Setting: primary care Methods: Sixty-three subjects with a body mass index (BMI) above 30 kg/m2 were recruited into the programm for reducing weight and changing their life style with the aim of reducing risk factors for metabolic syndrome. All subjects received education on their diet during one-week stay in outpatient clinic and were invited on five follow-up visits during the one-year programm. The multidisciplinary team that worked with the patients consisted of doctors, pharmacists, nurses and dietitians. The role of pharmacists was to collect the medical history, counsel patients on their life style changes, and to take measurements during the follow up visits. At the beggining and at each follow-up visit, weight, waist circumference and blood preassure were measured, BMI was calculated and blood samples were obtained in order to determine lipid profile, glucose levels and CRP. Statistical analysis were conducted using SPSS version 19.0 Results: Preliminary results compared the effect of life-style changes during six months among obese patients and patients with metabolic syndrome. There was significant weight reduction, reduction of waist circumference and fasting plasma glucose. The attrition rate was 31.6% during the 6 months period. Main reasons of attriton were leak of motivation and personal problems. Conslusion: The programm was succesful in weight reduction and reduction of factors contributing to metabolic syndrome. The pharmacist was important team member in patient care of obese patient and patients with metabolic syndrome.
