Sažetak
School is inherently boring and frustrating. Consequently, the same is considered about language learning. In order to change this view teachers need to find a way to motivate students and make school and language learning more interesting. Some ideas and suggestions how to achieve this have been described in this paper. While teaching, teachers should take into account the physical and psychological characteristics of young learners as well as their interests and preferences and accordingly assure the basic motivational conditions. Also, various aspects of motivation need to be recognized, in addition to different motivation types among learners. Having covered the basic characteristics of a motivational classroom, a teacher can then put more effort in designing various teaching and learning strategies which will result in creating satisfied and eager language learners prepared for achieving communicative competence. Some examples of creative strategies for motivating young learners are given at the end of the paper. As an example from the teaching practice a small research was conducted to question the teachers’ attitudes about the motivational and creative aspects of foreign language textbooks. The results have shown that teachers are generally satisfied with the abovementioned aspects of textbooks. However, a lot of additional, authentic materials and activities are required in order to make language learning enjoyable and successful.
