Sažetak
The goal of this paper is to determine the condition and Geographical Indications (GIs) protection models for traditional cheeses and the main benefits of GIs protection. The article is based on the analysis of previously published papers about GIs. Geographical Indications are collective intellectual property rights, which identify a good as originating in a certain territory or a region where a given quality, reputation or other characteristics is essentially attributable to its geographical origin. Three EU schemes known as PDO (protected designation of origin), PGI (protected geographical indication) and TSG (traditional speciality guaranteed) promote and protect names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs. According to the literature, GIs help producers to obtain a premium price for their products, prevent misuse of the product name, increase the degree of recognition of traditional products in the global market, contribute to the positive image of the production areas of the region, GIs increase production, encourage the establishment of stakeholder associations (associations, cooperatives) for the common entrance to the market, create local jobs and reduce rural exodus. Only 12 agricultural and food product in Croatia were protected with GIs according to the new Law, while in EU the total number of registered product name is 1100. Looking at the types of products that are being protected in EU ; cheeses accounting for 18 percent of the registrations. France and Italy dominate the cheese registration, with 47 and 35 registrations respectively. Until August 15, 2012, in Croatia was not protected neither of many tradional cheese, that is why future activities should be focus on informing and education of producers and other stakeholders in the supply chain about advantages and benefits of protecting GIs.
