Sažetak
The first samplings of horse flies with colored modified box traps in Croatia were performed in the Monjoroš Forest along the west bank of the River Danube (UTM CR 37), (45○45' N 18○52' E) from 6th to 12th of July 2011 and from 18th to 31th of July 2011. The modified box traps consisted of 80x80x60 cm four sided plywood box set at 80 cm above ground, open underneath and with metal insect net on the top. Instead of two diagonally positioned collecting cones, the modified box trap has 20 cm wide opening in the centre of insect net, with removable collecting cap made of polyester mosquito mash positioned on the opening. The outside of each box trap was painted in different color: one brown, black, bordeaux, violet, green, red, blue, yellow, orange and white, while the inner sides of the box traps were left unpainted. The painting was made with acrylic colors. The traps were placed in three rows 15 m apart, while the distance between traps in the row was 20 m. During the sampling period the placement of the traps was changed every five days. The traps were freshly baited every day with 4 ml of 1-octen-3-ol as attractant. During the sampling period 2, 950 horse flies were collected, which were classified in 12 species from genera Chrysops, Atylotus, Hybomitra, Tabanus and Haematopota. In the collected sample the most abundant species was Tabanus bromius L., 1758 with 92.50% collected specimens, while the remaining 11 species made only 7.50% of collected specimens. The most specimens of the species Tabanus bromius were collected in the brown trap, and Chi-square analysis showed that there is a significant difference in sampling of Tabanus bromius between differently colored traps. The second most abundant species was Tabanus tergestinus Egger, 1859 with 3.66% of collected specimens, from which the most specimens were also collected in the brown trap, and the Chi-square analysis showed significant difference in sampling of this species between colored box traps.
