Sažetak
Aircraft instruments used for flight control during regular flight operations need to satisfy several rigorous requirements. These include the reliability and instantaneous character of the values shown. Among them, the data of instantaneous vertical speed is in some cases rather important. That requires an instrument that measures this speed, the variometer. Prevalent number of types of variometers do not satisfy the requirement for instantaneous indication, i.e. they operate in the integrated-and-lag-in-time mode, thus making themselves second class instruments for modern flight operations. In this paper we list the factors influencing the variometer operation, and discuss the possible range of its time lags that could be encountered. The most important factors are manufacturing complexity, maintenance requirements, realistic pressure distribution fluctuations in the static ports vicinity during flights, reliability and time lag of value the variometer shows. These factors limit time lag both from the aspect of long values and from the aspect of low values. We argue about the need for alternative design of variometers that would have optimised response to the influence of the factors listed.
