Sažetak
In historical linguistics the term circulus vitiosus is employed for cases where each of the two presupposed sound changes is used as an argument for the other’s existence, despite neither being aG ested in texts or being unambiguously derivable by the comparative method or internal reconstruction. Slovakian linguist Eugen Pauliny’s theory on the origin of the Rhythmic Law, based on the assumption that in Central Slovak jers disappeared before the process of contraction, is shown to be an example of this type of argumentation.
