Sažetak
Marginalization is often contemplated in the spatial relation of the core (center) and the periphery. Mljet, as well as majority of Croatian islands has represented triple periphery in relation to actual cores of development in Croatia: 1. the capital city Zagreb, 2. regional centres (especially Dubrovnik) and 3. the coast. Growing differences in the socio-economic development between the center(s) and the periphery caused intensive negative socio- geographic processes that characterize majority of Croatian islands: depopulation, population ageing, setback in the economic development (including tourism), degradation of cultural heritage etc. These processes are diametrical to the actual and potential value of the Croatian archipelago with diverse natural heritage and precious cultural heritage as a result of evaluation of the islands since the prehistoric period and complex cultural influences. Tourism is main carrier of globalization processes on Croatian islands. Although slower than on the coast, development of tourism has had multiple positive implications on the islands. However, domination summer vacation tourism and underdevelopment of other economic activities have constrained more successful economic development that is not capable to mantain existing population on the island and to attract new inhabitants from the mainland. Unfortunately, poor development of selective forms of tourism, that are based on the natural and cultural heritage and that are used to preserve it, is an important factor of insufficient evaluation of material and intangible heritage that remains only the rich potential for future tourism development. Mljet island, with its surface area of 101 sq km and 1081 inhabitants (in 2011) is a representative example of mentioned processes and issues. Western part of the island has been protected as the National Park Mljet and it is the tourism and economic core of the island with fairly balanced demographic processes. Central and eastern part of the island have been characterized by the divergence between demographically progressive coastal settlements with developed bathing tourism and rapidly depopulating settlements in the island inland with poor tourism development. With the exception of the NP Mljet, the island's natural and cultural heritage have been meagerly used in tourism and they have been threatened by the accelerated and unplanned growth of the bathing tourism. The object of the research is the analysis of the tourist resources of Mljet as a potential for the development of complex tourist offer with selective types of tourism. The goal of the research is to determine insufficiently evaluated elements of the island's tourist resources and the level of tourism development by the groups of settlements. Aims of the research are to determine possibilities of optimal tourism development and to propose selective forms of tourism in order to promote more successful economic and demographic development of the island, as well as to prevent further negative consequences of unplanned tourism growth. The paper is methodologically based on the analisys of the scientific and other literature and statistical data, field investigation carried out 19-21 August 2011 and a survey conducted with 21 Mljet households and the headquarters of the Municipality of Mljet, Mljet Tourist Bord and National Park Mljet. Based on the spatio-temporal dynamics of tourism and its spatial implications areas with developed tourism and heritage evaluation will be determined, as well as areas that need to be developed. Existing tourism resources and the tourism dynamics will be used to propose types of tourism needed for balanced tourism and socio- economical development adapted to the island's environment and in accordance with the existing demographic resources. Attitudes of local population and headquarters of key institutions will be specially taken into consideration.
