Sažetak
Croatia and its islands are deeply affected by depopulation as a consequence of emigration, unfavourable birth rates and death rates increase resulting in rapidly ageing population. A good example of such processes and their implications on sustainable development is Ilovik, a small island located in the northern Adriatic. In June 2011, a survey of population, and socio- economic and environmental conditions was undertaken on Ilovik in order to investigate past developments, present situation and future prospect of the island. Fifty five households were interviewed which represented almost all who resided on the island at the time of the two week research. Almost 95 percent of all permanent residents were included in the survey, as well as dual residents, vacation home residents, and long term renters. The interviews included general information about the respondents, their economic status, property ownership and land use changes, tourism development, environmental changes, and the government role in Ilovik's development. As a consequence of the 90-year-long population decrease only 78 inhabitants permanently reside on the island today. This is the outcome of joint processes - natural population fall and negative net-migration despite of recent weak in-migration stream of retirees. Pulled by better education and work opportunities in the cities of Croatia and abroad younger active population has been leaving the island for generations. This long-lasting depopulation caused extremely unfavourable age and sex composition of the island. Predominant elderly population negatively affects demographic resources and reduces prospects for demographic revitalization, as well as further development of the island.
