Sažetak
During the past few years, the uptake of renewable energy in Croatia, in particular wind energy, is accelerating. Typically, as it is in most of the countries, a measurement network which is dense enough to show the detailed spatial variability of winds does not exist. That was a one of the reasons to produce modelled "wind climate" over Croatia and surrounding countries. Dynamical downscaling of the 10-yr period of the ERA-40 ECMWF Re-analysis to 2 km horizontal grid spacing was performed using the ALADIN model, the operational model used in Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service. Modelling results show wind speed minimum westerly from Istria peninsula maximums connected to region with strong Bora. Typical 10-year mean wind over the Adriatic sea are in range from 3 m/s to 7 m/s. Comparison with measurements on Eastern Adriatic coast shows that the bias and RMSE are around 10% of the mean wind speed value. Yearly variability of the 10 m mean yearly speed over eastern Adriatic reached minus/plus 20% of 10-year mean wind speed. It is well known that strong wind is responsible for intensive mixing in sea and spatially cooling of the surface layer. Satellite measurements of the Sea surface temperature in April show interannual variability too. Comparison of the sea surface temperature derived from satellite measurements in spring, when minimum in Sea surface temperature is expected and mean wind speed during the winter is investigated.
