Sažetak
Acceptance or rejection in the group of peers during the school-period plays an important role in the later building relationships with people and a good psychological and social adaptation (George, 2004). Harmonious relationships with peers during adolescence provide better mental health at middle age, while the consequences of peer rejection can cause a feeling of loneliness even while attending school, an aggression in relation to other pupils and generally a number of negative personal and social outcomes for the individual (Hightower, 1990 ; Dacey and Kenny, 1994 ; Lansford et al., 2001 ; Capaldi et al., 2001 ; Domitrovich, 2001 ; Yu, 2008). Among other important correlates of social status it is shown that the adolescent’s acceptance in the group of peers is statistically significant in relation to the level of adolescent’s self-esteem (Ingoglia, 2001 ; Chiu, 2001), where high level of self- esteem is the basis for further positive outcomes and success of these students, both in school context and in life outside the school (Harter, 1990 ; Schuez, 2001). The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the social status in the peer group and adolescent’s self- esteem. This research try to check the detailed relationship between the social status of adolescents in the peer group and the level of their self-esteem and consider the assumption that adolescents with higher self-esteem will have better or more desirable social status in the group of peers
