Sažetak
In this work characterization of bamboo and sorption properties of bamboo were studied. Bamboo plant is well recognized for its multifunctionality as plant (ecology, agro-forestry) and as a material (wood and paper industries, nutritional industries, etc.) but last few years most eco-friendly crops and the “green” properties of bamboo have started to attract consumers in the textile market. Bamboo fibre has many excellent properties that make it ideal for processing into textiles. In textile form, bamboo retains many of the properties it has as a plant (antibacterial, biodegradable, breathable, absorbent, etc.). However, most of the manufacturers are currently using regenerated viscose production method to process bamboo plants into fibres, using a large amount of toxic chemicals. It is questionable to use the term “green” on the current bamboo textile products. But much bamboo fibre is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from the natural organic bamboo by a high tech process that is non-polluting to the environment during the production. The main chemical used during the process is sodium hydroxide, most commonly known as caustic soda used in food production, production of paper, etc. It is very hard to identify real bamboo fiber from common viscose fiber. Some producers and Institutes have the testing procedures able to successfully identify bamboo fibre. In this work some of them were used. For this work samples of bamboo towels were bought in famous factory in China. In the first step characterization and chemical composition was done. Alpha-cellulose, β-cellulose, γ- cellulose and degree of polymerization were determinate. Also, cross-section by scanning electron microscope was done. On that way bamboo viscose fibre from original bamboo was identified. Second step was investigation of sorption properties by liquid absorption capacity method in cold and hot tap water. It is well known that bamboo is highly water absorbent, able to take up three times its weight in water.
