Sažetak
The electrolysis process, where alumina is reduced by carbon to produce aluminium, is the largest user of carbon anodes. There are two basic anode designs, the prebaked anodes and the single, selfbaking Soederberg anode. Prebaked carbon anodes are made from a mixture of calcined petroleum coke as filler and coal tar pitch as binder formed into blocks and baked at 1150°C. These anodes must be replaced at regular intervals. The remaning parts of spent anodes from the aluminium production are called anode butts. To improve the economics of the process, the cleaned anode butts are crushed and reused in the production of new anodes. About 20% of the anode is recycled material. This work deals with the results of investigation of the anode butts microstructure. Microstructure was determined using the method of optical microscopy. Microstructure have important role to the reactivity of a carbon anode. The active surfaces, found primarily in micropores, are connected by more CO2 reactivity as well as inorganic contents to have higher air reactivities and wear of the anode.
