Sažetak
The investigation was conducted in the Kopački Rit floodplain (Danube, Croatia), during seven consecutive years. Its purpose was to test the effects of seasonal succession on abiotic environment, phytoplankton biomass and heterotrophic bacterioplankton development contrary to the effects of floodplain hydrology. Although it is known that a significant proportion of biotic variability could be explained by means of water temperature, its relative importance compared to hydrology is rarely assessed in floodplain ecosystems, and it is not known in which proportion they are interfered. Although water temperature was significantly different between seasons, the regression models suggested that the temperature was less important than hydrology in structuring biotic and abiotic properties. Interference of hydrology and temperature was established for nitrate and total phosphorus concentrations and electrical conductivity. Nevertheless, the strongest structuring effects of hydrology were expressed during summer when the highest temperatures were established. The highest phytoplankton biomass was established during isolation phases, as well as the highest ratio of copiotrophic to oligotrophic bacteria, electrical conductivity, ammonia, Kjeldahl nitrogen and total phosphorus concentrations. Phytoplankton biomass was also proportional to the annual frequency of isolation and flow pulse phases resulting in translation of physical pulses into positive ecological pulses. On the contrary, flood pulses had a destimulating effect on biota and abiotic environment resulting in translation of physical pulses into negative ecological pulses. Hence, summer and early fall in years of high annual frequency of isolation and flow pulses could be expected as productivity hot-spots, while interference affect only few environmental variables.
