Sažetak
AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to analyze clinical features of psychiatric disorders in patients with multiple sclerosis who were admitted to Psychiatric Hospital “Vrapče”. METHODS AND MATERIAL: A retrospective study of patients who were presented to Psychiatric Hospital “Vrapče” with diagnosed multiple sclerosis in the period from 1995 to 2005. We analyzed the epidemiological data and clinical psychiatric features. Psychiatric features were divided into two groups according to their psychotic or affective presentation, especially suicidal behavior. Also, the relationship between first psychiatric hospitalization and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis was analyzed. RESULTS: The fifteen patients with diagnosed multiple sclerosis were included. In the analyzed group we had eleven female and four men. The 36.3 years is the mean age when the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis was made. The 39.8 years is the mean age when the patients were admitted to psychiatric hospital. Seven of these patients had in all hospitalization psychotic symptoms. Next six patients were presented with affective disorder primarily depression. Other two patients had psychotic and affective symptomatology in separated hospitalizations. Suicidal attempts had seven patients. The six patients had at least three psychiatric hospitalizations before the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis was made. CONCLUSIONS: Although many psychiatric syndromes are associated with multiple sclerosis, a small proportion account for psychiatric admission. Rarely first manifestation of multiple sclerosis may be presented as psychiatric disorder. Our results showed that patients with multiple sclerosis who were hospitalized in psychiatric hospital equally present either with psychotic or depressive symptoms. The patients who are hospitalized in psychiatric hospital might be sometimes overlooked especially in absence of clear neurological deficit.
