Sažetak
Stoneflies inhabit clean, cold and fast running waters. They are very sensitive for any changes or pollution of natural habitat, therefore environmental monitoring agencies use them as indicator organisms for water quality. Several scientists have studied this group of aquatic insects in former Yugoslavia in the past (D. Kaćanski, P. Ikonomov, I. Sivec). In 1980 about 150 species was recorded from the territory of former Yugoslavia. Recent studies of Balkan Peninsula (Murányi, Popijač, and Sivec) showed much more diverse fauna of those aquatic insects. Several additional species were described recently, and some still need to be described, what makes this area a real hot spot, and one of the richest areas in Europe of this group of aquatic insects.
