Sažetak
The research was done on the examinees from the island of Hvar (N=1496 ). Factor analyses of 22 dietary groups, based on Croatian nutritional classification, showed three latent dimensions of dietary patterns: 1 (meat poultry and vegetables), 2 (sweets and juices) and 3 (olive oil fruits and nuts) which together account for 30, 5 % of total variance. Individuals with highest scores in dietary pattern 1 are smokers, < 40 and 40 to 60 years of age, with high school education. Those with high scores for dietary pattern 2 are predominantly males and < 40 years of age. In the dietary pattern 3, a linear decline in age was noticed with an increase in dietary pattern scores. Through logistic regression analysis we were able to confirm the relation of the dietary patterns and metabolic syndrome. Further, we examined the relation of dietary patterns and the incidence of metabolic syndrome. We confirm that the likelihood to develop metabolic syndrome is higher for dietary patterns 1 (OR=1, 26 ; p=0.017) and 2 (OR=1, 25 ; p=0.040). Age and BMI showed to be positive, while physical activity a negative predictor of metabolic syndrome.
