Sažetak
Understanding and preserving biodiversity was one of the most important global challenges for the past 20 years and will continue to be an important scientific issue during next decades. Within the extant described marine phytoplankton taxa, the diatoms, the dinoflagellates and the haptophytes appear to dominate phytoplankton communities and are responsible for seasonal blooms in South Adriatic. Some phytoplankton taxa (e.g. dinoflagellates Ornithocercus splendidus Schütt and Neoceratium paradoxides (Cleve) F. Gomez, D. Moreira et P. Lopez-Garcia) has recently been recorded for the first time in the Adriatic Sea. Their occurrence altogether with some diatoms (e.g. Ditylum brightwellii (T. West) Grunow) might be related to documented changes in Ionian Sea circulation that result in the flow of Aegean and Levantine waters into the Adriatic.
