Sažetak
Tomo Mikloušić (1767-1833), as one of the few Pre-Illyrian writers in the Kajkavian dialect, has entered all Croatian histories of literature. The evaluation of his literary works is unanimously characterised as late-Enlightenment endeavours in the very scarce output of that time, without much literary value. Until now, Mikloušić has not been known as a music writer.
His main work Izbor dugovanyh vszakoverztneh za haszen, y razveszelénye szluséchéh (in modern orthography: Izbor dugovanj vsakoverstneh za hasen, i razveselenje slušečeh, i.e. A Choice of Various Practical Actions for Utility and Recreation of Listeners) was printed in Zagreb in 1821. It encompasses 186 pages, containing a short history of Croatia and Croatian literature; data and instructions regarding economy and home healing; domestic proverbs, wise sentences, instructive poems, and famous things; and, a list of persons in Croatia who backed the publication of the book.
The topics on music are situated within the chapter on famous things, and consist of two listings: on famous organs throughout the world, and on famous bells. These data are followed by a list of wine barrels, a judgement on the age of ther world, information on beer kettles in England, and on lottery games. Music is thus situated within the part of the book intended for <recreation of listeners>.
Mikloušić presents data on ten organs in ten towns in seven countries: Haarlem (The Low Countries), Olomouc (Bohemia-Moravia), Prague (Bohemia), Vienna (Austria), Munich (Germany-Bavaria), Magdeburg (Germany-Prussia), Strasbourg (France), Ulm (Germany), Lucerne (Switzerland) and Rome (Italy). He adds information on the time of their building, on the number of registers, performances, and character of sound. He also gives information on psychological, sociological and aesthetical order concerning the sound of the organs and impact on listeners.
Regarding bells, Mikloušić offers data on 26 bells in 23 towns in 12 countries: Ghent (Belgium), London (England), Brno (Bohemia-Moravia), Graz and Vienna (Austria), Strasbourg, Rouen, Toulouse and Paris (France), Bern and Schaffhausen (Switzerland), Amsterdam (The Low Countries), Rome and Milan (Italy), Magdeburg, Erfurt and Berlin (Germany), Santiago de Compostella (Spain), Moscow (Russia), and Beijing (China). He adds information of their weight in cents and some peculiarities concerning their history or use.
Mikloušić's sources remain unexplored. The value of his book in Croatian musicology consist in the first of systematised data published in Croatian on organs and bells, and the first use of Croatian terms for some specific details on the construction of organs.
