Sažetak
The paper analyzes relative position of the South Eastern Europe countries (ex-Yugoslavia countries and Albania) in comparison to more advance European economies in the context of possible further EU enlargement. The countries in the region have expressed their interest to join the EU and are at different stages of the accession process. With that respect, the analyzed countries have incorporated the Maastricht criteria into the goals of their respective strategic economic policy measures. Simultaneously, specific policy agenda agreed on the EU level, such as employment promotion, environment protection or research and development expenditures increases have also played important role in shaping the national policy measures and the institutional setup of the economies. The recent financial crises had adverse effects throughout the region. The countries that were more severely affected actually increased their gap in comparison to the EU level. The paper discusses the evolution of the gap and the possible determinants that could act in the direction of its decrease. The underlying question of the discussion in the paper is whether we could provide some evidence on the macroeconomic level if the common EU goals have acted towards the convergence. Another possibility is that specific national policy measures and/or smaller EU integration factors have actually been beneficial to enable the countries to respond to the crises more strongly.
