Sažetak
In the Middle Ages and in the modern period, numbers of states and statelets, cities with the right to mint coins, put their coats-of-arms on their money, or the figures of their patrons. And so the Dubrovnik Republic put on some kinds of coins three versions of its coat-of-arms ; for example, the one with the figure of St Blaise, the one with horizontal bars and finally that one the inscription LIBERTAS. Still, the most frequently seen on numerous denominations of Ragusan coins is the figure of the patron saint of city and republic, St Blaise. Half-figure of St Blaise was put on coins of Dubrovnik on the obverse of the copper soldo (minted 1678, 1682-1797), and in full length on the copper half grossetto (minted 1795 and 1796). On the grossi (minted from 1337 to 1438, and in 1621), and the grossetti, . minted from 1626 to 1761) we can see St Blaise in full figure, standing, facing, performing a blessing with his raised right arm, holding a crosier in his left. The full length figure of St Blaise appears on the perpero (old perpero, minted 1683- 1750 ; the new perpero, minted 180l-1803), the half perpero (minted 1801), the scudo (minted 1708-1750), the half scudo (minted 1708-l7S0), the ducato (minted 1723 and 1797). The bust of St Blaise however is rarer on the coins of the Republic, appearing on a very nice artilucco (minted from 1617 to 1701). Two kinds of tallero, on the so-called «Beardy», or Bradan (minted between 1725 and 1743). the half-«Beardy» (minted from 1731 to 1735). and on a proof of me new tallero of 1751. There is alo a head of St Blaise full face on a coin: on the half-grosso (1370, 1372-, and 1514-1533). As for medals and miniature medals with the figure of St Blaisw one should say that the oldest such medal was struck in Dubrovnik in 1707, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the new St Blaise's church. The artist was Paolo Lonciares, a die cutter in the Dubrovnik Republic mint from 1706 to 1709. The oldest miniature medal with the figure of St Blaise, according to Milan Rešetar, was made about 1790 by the goldsmith Pagani. This is also me first in the series of those whom Rešetar described in his work Dubrovačka numizmatika. Among the small medals there are a copper and a silver one, today unfortunately very rare, commissioned by Dubrovnik goldsmith Karlo Gjurašić from the engraver Franz Hocke in 1923. This small medal imitates the artilucco. A special place belongs to a medal by the great Croatian medallist Ivo Kerdić, struck in 1932 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the construction of the parish church of St Blaise in Zagreb. In 1971 Josip Banić made an oval medal and badge in a Baroque cartouche, in various size, marking the St Blaise jubilee celebrations. As for contemporary medallists who have several times made medals with the figure of St Blaise, Stjepan Divković and Damir Mataušić ought to be particularly mentioned. On the occasion of the 1000 years of the existence of the Dubrovnik metropolis in 1997, Divković modelled a very beautiful silver and gold medal, struck in thc best Swiss mint of the Huguenin Frères in Le Locle with the figure of the saint on the obverse, and the model of the city on the reverse. This medal was issued by Dr Berislav Tomac, then in Hagen, Germany.
