Sažetak
We have compiled large dataset of (4615) vegetation plots originally classified into class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea from northwesteren Balkan Peninsula (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Serbia). Dataset was stratified to obtain representativness and to avoid oversampling of some regions. Species composition was classified by cluster analysis and gradients explored using ordination methods. Relationships between species richness, environmental and structural variables were investigated with regression analysis. Ecological interpretation of syntaxa was made with Pignatti ecological indicator values and phytogeographic patterns were assessed by examining species distribution types. The results present transnational classification that unifies different syntaxonomical concepts used in the region. Numerical classification clarifies positions of transitional and local associations and geographical ranges of syntaxa (especially alliances Deschampsion and Molinion).
