Sažetak
This paper provides a review of recent theoretical and empirical papers in English and Croatian on the roles of preschool teachers in child play, observing play as an educational tool. The purpose of this paper was to determine dominant understandings of play in education, specifically, dominant understandings of the roles of adults in child play. Contemporary preschool theory emphasizes the importance of the way a preschool teacher is involved in child play and describes the roles preschool teachers have in play that enrich it and support child learning and development. However, empirical research studies indicate that due to organizational reasons, programme burdens or personal beliefs, preschool teachers do not get sufficiently involved in child play or are involved in a way that guides and corrects play. It is presumed that the results are applicable in the pedagogy of play in a sense of building bridges between the perspectives of adults and children's perspectives.
