Sažetak
Rapid population growth and urbanisation, as well as mass tourism and transport have considerable negative environmental impacts, especially in Mediterranean coastal areas, changing their natural features and imposing nearly insurmountable challenges. These impacts on the ecosystems have resulted in conflicts among competing uses, producing serious socio-economic and political consequences. Sustainable water resources management in these areas requires an advanced level of integrated water resources management. Unfortunately, local conditions with regard to data, resources, standard, water sector organisation, etc. are usually unfavourable. Therefore, the application of complex procedures and methods is not recommended since it wouldn’t ensure sustainability of the solution. In order to achieve sustainable coastal sea water management the problems should be solved on a long-term basis which means that each step should represent a positive shift towards better water resources management, as well as initial level for the next, higher level of problem solving. This paper presents the prevailing conditions and the experience gained in the area of the Kastela Bay in Croatia. Due to a number of political, historical, natural and socio-economic reasons, the area became one of the largest and most widely known pollution “hot-spot” areas of the Mediterranean region. In order to resolve the accumulated problems an integrated ecological project for the infrastructure development was developed. The results of the integrated approach were very good, especially since Croatia is a developing country in transition.
