Sažetak
A solitary striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba Meyen, 1833) was observed in Mali Lošinj harbour, Nothern Adriatic Sea, Croatia in the period between 1st and 11th September 2008. This species, known to prefer open waters beyond the continental shelf, is listed as a visiting species in the Adriatic Sea by IUCN and is considered unusual in its shallower northern part. During its stay in the harbour, caracterized by intense boat traffic, behavioural and photo-ID studies were conducted from a rigidhull inflatable 6 m boat. The protocol for behavioural data collection was „individual follow“ while the sampling method was „continuous sampling“. Respiration data were collected each time the individual surfaced to breathe, what implied some of the previously determined behavioural state. Analysis of the behavioural states show that the most frequent behavior state was Dive (60, 8%) followed by Rest (35.9%) and in small proportion Travel (1.8%) and Playful (1.4%). The dolphin showed certain preference to particular areas of the harbour related to its behaviour i.e. it used mainly south-western side of the harbour, very close to the coastline when resting and deeper area towards the dead end of the harbour when diving. Even thought significant number of boats was present within the harbour, no apparent disturbance or avoidance to boats was recorded.
