Sažetak
In the Independent State of Croatia most of the daily and weekly newspapers occasionally used political satire and humour, whereas the weekly newspapaers Šilo (1942-44) and Vrabac (1944-45) were specialized magazines of this kind. It was characteristic for these newspapers to publish cartoons dedicated to the relations between the Allies and their military position on the first pages. The main actors were Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt. In the year1944, Šilo and Vrabac dedicated more than twenty cartoons to them. Through pictures and running commentary they actualized the question of the second front, the successful German submarine war in the Atlantic, the British defeat at Tobruk, the alleged American take over of British and French colonies in North Arfrica, the Soviet supplying difficulties on the Eastern battlefield, the consequences of the Allies' air offensive in Italy in the spring of 1943, the capitulation of Italy, the results of the Teheran Conference etc. Pictures, which were an important part of the propaganda war which was being fought in the background of the war, and particularly cartoons in Šilo and Vrabac graphically showed the attitudes of the Ustasha government toward the alliance between western democracies, the USA and Great Britain and the communist Soviet Union during 1943 and 1944. If cartoons are disregarded as a form of humour, the contents of Šilo and Vrabac were in fact a serious political message of the Ustasha government to the citizens of the ISC that there is in fact no alternative to the ISC's alliance with Germany.
