Sažetak
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the changes in metabolite composition and antioxidant potency of chokeberries influenced by grafting. Cuttings of black chokeberries (Aronia melanocarpa L., var. Viking) were grafted onto rootstocks of European rowan trees (Sorbus aucuparia L.) which grow wild in the forests of Gorski kotar (mountainous-highland Croatia) and the trees set fruit after 2 years. For comparison, parallel plantings of own-rooted black chokeberry bushes were established alongside the grafted European rowan trees, under the same environmental conditions. The differences in metabolite profiles in ripe fruits were determined by GC-MS and the data were complemented with UHPLC analyses of flavonoids and anthocyanins as well as spectrophotometric analyses of total phenols, total flavonoids and flavanols, total anthocyanins, and total hydroxycinnamic acids. In addition, the antioxidant activity of berries, both own-rooted and grafted was determined using three in vitro antioxidant assays. Metabolite analysis has shown significant differences in metabolite profiles of chokeberries and European rowan fruit while the grafted versus non-grafted chokeberries exhibited only slight differences in metabolite composition. The detected changes in metabolite profiles did not have a significant effect on antioxidant activity of studied fruits.
