Sažetak
The basic purpose and task of the mother tongue (Croatian) lessons in primary and secondary school as well as the faculty is development of language competences (Curriculum, 2006). In terms of morphology, Croatian is a very complex language and therefore in early learning it should be taught through development of communicative competence only. However, despite many changes in the educational system, the research shows that in early mother tongue (Croatian) learning teachers still focus on development of linguistic competence (knowledge about language). In the secondary school, only 20% of the total number of Croatian language lessons is dedicated to grammar, orthography and language expression exercises, which is too little and insufficient. The result is poor language competence of adult speakers. Though Croatian language is the most comprehensive subject both in primary and secondary school, but the students of the Faculty of Teacher Education, future teachers, have poor mother tongue competence and very negative attitude towards it. In view of the above-mentioned facts, we would like to determine the level of communicative and linguistic competence students who will in the future teach Croatian language (for five hours per week). In addition, we would also like to determine the attitude of examinees towards Croatian as the mother tongue. We expect the results to show an insufficient level of language competences of future Croatian teachers, though they will be aware of the importance of their improvement for the purpose of professional growth and development. The research sample will consist of 120 students of the Faculty of Teacher Education of various specializations who will be tested by the Test of linguistic competence and the Test of communicative competence and will also fill in the Attitudes Questionnaire. The data will be processed by the SPSS statistics software by the methods of the analysis of variance, Chi-squared test and the Pearson correlation coefficient. The fact that communication in the mother tongue is important is supported by the European Commission who adopted the Eight Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, out of which the first and crucial one is communication in the mother tongue. Therefore, the results of this research are expected to highlight the need to change the manner of teaching Croatian language as the mother tongue on all educational levels and the need to improve the language the language skills in professional growth and development of future Croatian teachers.
