Sažetak
About 10 per cent of the Croatian population lives with disability. Their social status has showed slow change. A number of different activities, related to inclusion of people with disabilities, have been done in Croatian society last 10 years. Croatia is also one of the State Parties of The Convention of the Rights of Persons with disabilities. The Croatian legislation contains certain obligations relating to the inclusion of people with disabilities. The social model of disability has been proclaimed in Croatian society but there is still a huge impact of medical model of disability. It can be seen through discrimination, stigmatization and social exclusion of people with disabilities in everyday life. Economic disadvantages and social exclusion are the determinants of people with disabilities. The aim of the project “The social status of the people with disabilities in the Republic of Croatia” was to get insight in quality of life of people with disabilities in Croatia. The data was collected from 689 participants. All participants were people with disabilities. Statistical methods were used for processing and analysis of data. The poster presentation will show information on participants’ employment, household income and their position as social care services’ users. These results will be compared with National Statistics Data. The results show that people with disabilities in Croatia often live in or near poverty. They have low household incomes. They are mostly unemployed and are social welfare recipients. Being recipients of social welfare ensure their existence. They cannot even reach the partial inclusion in community life. Unemployment, low household incomes and social exclusion lead to their stigmatization. The conclusion is that people with disabilities in Croatia are often economically disadvantaged and socially excluded. These results can help to improve social work practice, because the social work profession promotes social change and the empowerment of users.
