Sažetak
Spray drying is one of the best methods for drying heat sensitive materials such as food and pharmaceutical products. Products obtained by spray drying have considerably better properties and quality (narrow particle size distribution, mean particle size, appearance, texture, density, solubility, ..) in comparison with other methods of obtaining powders. Glycine crystallization during spray drying has been investigated on a laboratory scale. In order to obtain different polymorphs the experiments have been performed with addition of sodium chloride, ethanol and oxalic acid. The obtained powders were characterized by means of different methods (XRD, FTIR, DSC, particle and pore size distributions) and compared with a powder prepared without additives at the same process conditions. Proper selection of additive and its concentration can lead to a specific glycine polymorph. Crystallization mostly resulted with a mixture of alpha- and beta-glycine with a small amount of gama-glycine. Crystalline powders have a higher quantity of gama-glycine at higher concentrations of oxalic acid and lower concentration of sodium chloride. gama-glycine was not found in powders obtained from solutions containing ethanol. At room conditions, beta-glycine spontaneously transforms into a thermodynamically more stable alpha-glycine. Granulometric properties of the crystalline product were also influenced by the quantity of selected additive.
