Sažetak
The thesis aims at presenting vocabulary activities in four Croatian EFL textbooks for the first grade of elementary school. These include: Building blocks 1, Dip in 1, English box 1, Happy House 1. It provides some theoretical assumptions about vocabulary learning and teaching, and it analyses their influence on the choice and organization of vocabulary in textbook activities for this particular age group. The vocabulary found in these textbooks includes basic nouns, verbs and adjectives, and these relate to the following topics: greetings and introductions, family and friends, numbers up to ten, naming objects (toys and school things), naming elementary colours, classroom activities, food, birthdays, holidays. Croatian authors consult HNOS and NPIP in their preparation of vocabulary activities in their textbooks. However, their activities do not differ much from the ones found in Happy House 1 (the only textbook in this study written by British authors). The general characteristics of each of the textbooks were provided and afterwards vocabulary activities exemplified in more detail on the topic of 'Family', which can be found in all.four textbooks. Based on that, it is clear that vocabulary activities focus mostly on listening and speaking. Through some of these activities global reading ability is also practiced, and writing is introduced by tracing and copying letters, isolated words, and short sentences.
