Sažetak
The welding affects significantly the liability of stainless steel (SS) to pitting in oxidising electrolytes containing chlorides or other activating anions.According to generally accepted opinion ,the welding has a detrimental influence on pitting resistance of SS.It is purpose of this study to re-examine this viewpoint because local depassivation of SS depends on many factors.Several of them were so far neglected ,e.g. the state of SS surfaces resulting from the welding itself or by some mechanical, chemical or electrolytic post-welding treatments as well as by the position of the metal surface during the exposure of electrolyte. This paper concernes the testing of pitting liability of welded AISI 304 SS in FeCl3 solution in as welded state and after different surface treatments. The specimens were immersed horizontally into 6% FeCl3 solution at 22°C during 3 days with weld face (bottom position) or down (ceiling position).Manual arc welding and automatic plasma welding were used for the preparation of specimens from sheets and adequate fillers. After the exposure superficial pits densities and depths have been determined separately for particular areas (weld zone, heat tints and base metal zones).Variations of surface states and positions provoke in mentioned zones favourable or harmful changes.Specific phenomena afe observed along some melting lines of welds.
