Sažetak
Textile fabrics, especially cotton, are very flammable ; therefore, applying flame-retardant (FR) properties becomes necessary in order to ensure human safety under many different circumstances. On the other hand wool has, amongst all the natural textile fibres, a high degree of inherent non-flammability. The flammability of materials can be significantly reduced by appropriate blending with fibres of flame-retardant properties. The intention of our research was to study the impact of flame-retardant fibres within cotton and woollen blends in regard to textile characteristics such as limiting oxygen index which is one of the most important parameter for determination of flame-retardant effectiveness and gives information about relative flammability by measuring the minimum oxygen concentration that would support combustion. Second aim of our research was to find possible correlation with zeta potential analyses which reflects the status of the surface charge. Three groups of samples were investigated: blends of FR fibres with cotton (C) and wool (W) in different ratios, respectively, and special FR blend. The textile samples were obtained from Slovenian and Croatian textile companies either in the form of yarn or knitted fabrics.
