Sažetak
The vegetation of the Oleo sylvestris-Ceratonion siliquae Br.-Bl. ex Guinochet et Drouineau1944 alliance is spread in the most xerotherm part of the Croatian coast and islands. It develops in the area where the mean minimum of the coldest month of the year is higher than 3.5 º C (frequently 4-8 º C), total annual rainfall is less than 1, 000 mm (frequently 600-800 mm), and average maximum of the hottest month is higher than 28 º C. Pluviometric quotient does not exceed 100, which is a feature of semi-humid climate. In Croatia, this alliance is represented by the following associations: Myrto communis-Pistacietum lentisci (Molinier 1954) Rivas-Martínez 1975, Oleo sylvestris-Pistacietum lentisci Br.-Bl. 1931, Oleo sylvestris-Euphorbietum dendroidis Trinajstić 1973, Pistacio lentisci-Juniperetum phoeniceae Trinajstić 1987, Oleo sylvestris-Juniperetum phoeniceae Bruno et al. 1938, Erico arboreae-Arbutetum unedonis Allier et Lacoste 1980, Erico arboreae-Calicotometum infestae H-ić 1958, Querco ilicis-Pinetum halepnsis Loisel 1971, Junipero phoeniceae-Pinetum halepensis Trinajstić 1989, Pistacio lentisci-Pinetum halepensis De Marco et al. 1984, Erico manipuliflorae-Pinetum halepensis Krause et al. 1963). More recently, two new associations have been discovered on the Pelješac peninsula (Jasprica 2011): Juniperetum macrocarpae-phoeniceae Pedrotti et Cortini (1974) 1982 and Phillyreo angustifoliae-Juniperetum phoeniceae Arrigoni et al. 1985. The Oleo sylvestris-Pistacietum lentisci and Oleo sylvestris-Euphorbietum dendroidis associations are developed on the hottest and driest sites, mostly on southern aspects. Geographically, majority of associations is located along the central and southern Dalmatian coast and islands. Characteristic species of the alliance, besides Olea sylvestris and Ceratonia siliqua, are Pistacia lentiscus, Teucrium fruticans, Phillyrea angustifolia, Juniperus phoenicea etc., and they are good indicators of general and local climatic conditions. Thermo-Mediterranean (stenomediterran) low shrub formations of Euphorbia dendroides, and thick with stands of wild olive (Olea sylvestris) and carob (Ceratonia siliqua), are particularly valuable habitats in the Croatian proposal of NATURA 2000 network, protected by the Habitats Directive of the EU. This study shows data on distribution and ecological characteristics of the associations within the Oleo sylvestris-Ceratonion siliquae alliance in Croatia.
